"Gran Turismo for PC?

IGN recently spoke with Gran Turismo producer, Kazunori Yamauchi who answered questions about a possible PC version of the PlayStation racing masterpiece and just how far the console can be pushed.

March 24, 1998

Undeniably, Gran Turismo is one of the most comprehensive, fun and graphically realistic racing games to appear on any platform in some time. Having spent upward of 100 hours with the Japanese version of Gran Turismo IGN was pleased to have the opportunity to speak with the games' crreator, Kazunori Yamauchi (no relation to the NCL frontman of the same name), about the game's design and it's potential for showing up on a PC near you.

Mr. Kazunori answered questions about the sorts of games he enjoyed playing currently. Without exception, they were PC racing games (primarily Formula 1 titles) which prompted the question of "whether or not Gran Turismo would ever grace the PC?" (a thought that until Sony's PC translations of Jet Moto, Twisted Metal, Game Day, etc. were announced, seemed like an impossibility).

Kazunori replied that such project would have to be greenlighted by some one else at Sony who is responsible for such projects, but that if it were to happen, it would be a relatively simple transition. Kazunori said that the game was written with the possibility of such a port in mind. Second, Kazunori is currently "playing" with Voodoo 2 hardware which he has said to have found interesting.

On the subject of exactly how hard Gran Turismo is pushing the PlayStation, Kazunori had an interesting response. "For each project that I have done on the PlayStation (Motortoon, Motortoon 2, Gran Turismo), I believed that at that time I had pushed the hardware as far as it could go. Now, just three months after the game's release I think we used just 75 percent of the system's capabilities." It would seem that in its current form, Gran Turismo sucks up about half the system's processing power simply for physics calculations. Since the game's release, Kazunori says that the team has figured out a way to do the same calculations using half that power (resulting in the aforementioned 75 percent). He did go on to claim that his creation did use more of the PlayStation's potential, than any other game in 1997 (when the game was released in Japan)."
